Diary kept by Smith while a British prisoner of war in Saint Augustine, Fla., during the American Revolution. Includes details on British naval operations off the coast of South Carolina and Florida and British involvement with the Spanish in the West Indies. Also includes a biographical sketch of Josiah Smith (1804-1871), South Carolina clergyman.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782).
